Hipmunk City Love: A Weekend in Hong Kong

Hong Kong is known to many as an iconic center of business and culture in Asia. The surprisingly small cluster of islands that make up this former British colony are home to a myriad of unique attractions. Fusing Chinese traditions and modern capitalism, Hong Kong offers visitors sobering temples, an impressive downtown center, and a dizzying array of shops and eateries. However, this republic’s success has made it one of the most expensive cities to visit in Asia. Don’t be surprised if your Hong Kong hotel is tiny – you’ll want to leave it behind anyway to explore all the islands have to offer.

Hipmunk City Love: A Weekend in Bangkok

Bangkok is a city of contradictions, where huge modern shopping malls tower over small traditional Thai houses and food carts sit perched on the sidewalk in front of high-end restaurants. The contradictions are what make Thailand such a unique and fascinating place. It also allows for visitors of all types and budgets to have a great time in this bustling city. Having lived in Bangkok for almost two years, I’ve compiled a list of my favorite tourist activities and local hangout spots. So book one of the cheap hotels in Bangkok near one of the city’s transit stops and hit the humid streets of Bangkok.

Hipmunk City Love: Exploring Anaheim Outside of Disneyland

Anaheim is most well-known for beloved Disneyland, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t plenty to do beyond the theme park adventures. Sports lovers will enjoy taking in a baseball game down at Angel Stadium or a hockey match across the street at the Honda Center. Those who prefer a more low-key visit will be pleasantly surprised by the downtown Farmer’s Market and Packing District and nearby Anaheim Brewery. For a day enjoying the great outdoors, Yorba Park offers up plenty of space and lush foliage for barbecuing, relaxing, or throwing around a frisbee. So book your downtown Anaheim hotel and check out these unique local attractions.

Hipmunk City Love: A Guide to Amsterdam’s Best Museums

Amsterdam has a fascinating history, made all the richer by its prominence in Europe during the Dutch Golden Age. As one of the most important ports in the world during the 17th century, it was home to the Dutch East India and West India companies. Ships were sent sailing to such far-off places as India, Brazil, Sri Lanka, and Africa, returning with imports that would make Amsterdam the wealthiest city in the world for a time.

Hipmunk City Love: A Guide to Toronto’s Major Districts

Toronto is well-known as the most populated and diverse city in Canada. With over two million residents, this bustling capital city sits perched atop Lake Ontario and makes up the bulk of the Greater Toronto Area. Nearly half of the city’s residents have immigrated from countries outside of Canada, making Toronto one of the most culturally and ethnically diverse cities in the world. Well-defined neighborhoods break the city up into distinctive districts, each maintaining its unique character and culture. That means you’ll have lots of opportunities to explore from your Toronto hotel, wherever you choose to make your home base. Here I have assembled a guide to the most important districts.

Koh Lipe

Koh Lipe is one of my favorite ‘touristy’ islands in Thailand. While it’s extremely developed, the island still feels small and the developers have done a good job of keeping the buildings low and the bungalows natural. There are no huge hotels here to blot out your view of the nearby islands and prices have stayed somewhat reasonable given the influx of visitors over the last few years (emphasis on the somewhat). This is a great island for relaxation and beach-chilling. Continue reading Koh Lipe
