Hipmunk City Love: Top Stays in the Heart of San Diego

San Diego is a city close to my heart, with a handful of sandy beaches, myriad historic quarters, and the endless Balboa Park. Most importantly though, the weather stays beautiful year-round, meaning you can take a trip to this sunny city any time. With frequent deals on San Diego hotels and Airbnbs outside of high season, you won’t break the bank with these downtown accommodations.

Garden Cottage

This Garden Cottage Airbnb is the best value and most unique accommodation on the list. Enjoy your own private cottage in a gorgeous garden setting off the owner’s main house. The building features a separate entrance, small kitchenette, and cozy queen bed. Feel free to relax on any of the three outdoor decks and soak up the stunning bay views. However, the real clincher here is the location. You’ll be just blocks away from Little Italy, the Gaslamp Quarter, Balboa Park, and San Diego Zoo. With a price less than $100, this Airbnb is a serious steal.

Apartment in the Heart of the Gaslamp Quarter

The Gaslamp Quarter has become popular for visitors to San Diego. Lined with old Victorian-style houses, the area is now home to swanky bars and cozy eateries. The Apartment in the Heart of Gaslamp Airbnb fits right in with this funky vibe. The apartment features a kitchenette, flat-screen television, and comfortable bed, but the real selling point is the stunning view from the rooftop terrace. Though pricey, this one-bedroom apartment is spacious and well located.

Hotel Indigo

The Hotel Indigo Gaslamp Quarter is a great choice for someone who wants a serious list of amenities and a guilt-free stay. Rooms are spacious and chic, with high-end toiletries and spa-like showers. The on-site amenities really take things up a notch with a rooftop restaurant and bar that focus on organic local ingredients. You’ll sleep easy at night knowing Hotel Indigo is the ‘greenest’ hotel in San Diego and promotes fair wages. Most importantly, you can bring your furry friend along for your trip as Hotel Indigo is pet friendly and even offers a doggy daycare package.

Keating Hotel

In the heart of the Gaslamp Quarter, the Keating Hotel sets a funky, modern vibe for its guests. Each boutique room is uniquely decorated with bold colors and features California king beds. You’ll also find in-room Lavazza espresso makers and spacious rainfall showers to start your day off right. For a little indulgence, pamper yourself with in-room spa services or dig into your minibar. Room prices are affordable but not quite budget. However, considering the location just a few minutes walk from Petco and Balboa Park, the extra splurge might be worth it.

The Sofia Hotel

For a budget option that ticks all the boxes, check out the Sofia Hotel. Here you’ll enjoy all the usual modern comforts like premium bedding, in-room microwave and refrigerator, and even an on-site spa. Each room is decorated in an understated style that reflects the Victorian Gaslamp Quarter, but are a fantastic price for the prime downtown location.

Whatever your budget or accommodation requirements, you’ll have no problem enjoying yourself at one of these downtown hotels in San Diego.
