Hipmunk City Love: Exploring Anaheim Outside of Disneyland

Anaheim is most well-known for beloved Disneyland, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t plenty to do beyond the theme park adventures. Sports lovers will enjoy taking in a baseball game down at Angel Stadium or a hockey match across the street at the Honda Center. Those who prefer a more low-key visit will be pleasantly surprised by the downtown Farmer’s Market and Packing District and nearby Anaheim Brewery. For a day enjoying the great outdoors, Yorba Park offers up plenty of space and lush foliage for barbecuing, relaxing, or throwing around a frisbee. So book your downtown Anaheim hotel and check out these unique local attractions.

In the heart of downtown Anaheim, you’ll find the quirky Packing District which has recently gained popularity as the best spot for a lazy afternoon lunch or evening get-together. You can enjoy coffee and juice in the mornings, artisanal eateries for lunch, or live music and bars at night. The building itself is quite intriguing, made up of a restored Citrus Packing House and Car Showroom. After you’re completely stuffed from lunch, walk it off at the next door Farmer’s Market which offers great local produce and craft goods.

This small park just outside of Anaheim sits along the Santa Ana River and offers visitors a pleasant respite from the city bustle. Bring the family or just a good book and enjoy the green paths and foliage-lined walkways. You can also kayak, paddle boat and even fish on the river. Bikers, dog-walkers, and runners alike flock to this park in the early morning but there is plenty of space to go around. Barbecue facilities and large trees make a shady picnic or late afternoon lunch a treat in this pleasant park space.

Anaheim is home to two great sports teams and more importantly, great sports fans. The Anaheim Ducks, named after the infamous Mighty Ducks film, have played remarkably well in the last few years winning three division titles since 2012. Their fans are loyal and hearty, always keeping matches interesting. The Anaheim Angels over at Angel Stadium have one of the best records of fan attendance in baseball. The team itself performs very well in the MLB, but much like the hockey supporters, it’s the fans that make coming to the games so much fun.

Sample Local Beers at Anaheim Brewery

For something a little different, head over to Anaheim Brewery after filling up on delicious bites at the Packing District. Here you’ll find great service and a line-up of seriously tasty brews, like the Anaheim 1888 or the refreshing Coast to Coast IPA. The barley used in most of these beers are grown right in sunny California, making this a truly local brewery. Order up a fleet of samplers to split between friends in the Tasting Room or kick back with a pint in the sunny Beer Garden.
